Mississippi was once known for some of the nation's lowest education outcomes. But over the past decade, the state has made remarkable gains in fourth-grade reading—despite persistent poverty and other major challenges.
What changed? Early screening, evidence-based reading instruction, teacher coaching, summer literacy programs, and sustained policy support.
The "Mississippi Miracle" is not a simple success story. Questions remain about third-grade retention, equity, student well-being, and whether reading gains extend to broader educational outcomes.
Still, the experience offers an important lesson for healthcare: identify problems early, intervene consistently, measure results, and stay committed long enough to learn what works.
