A road narrows, stops being a road, and puts you down at the edge of still green water.

An evening walk through a small canal town, taken at the pace the stones insist on. You follow the water north as the last gold light lies flat across the surface, stop at the top of a low bridge to let the shape of the town assemble itself, and cross a small square where jasmine has climbed a wall and someone has left clean water out for the cats. A covered passage returns your footsteps to you a half-beat late. Past it, a basin of moored boats knocking softly against their posts, warm stone still holding the day, and a lamplighter working the far bank post by post until the water holds more light than the sky. A boatman passes, lifts his chin, and is gone. The bell in the tower rings, unhurried, and there is nowhere further to walk.🌙
