On July 2, 1937, Amelia Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan took off from New Guinea toward a tiny island in the middle of the Pacific and were never seen again. Tonight, we follow her story slowly from start to finish, until you drift off to sleep.
This calm, long-form history episode traces the full life and final flight of America’s most famous aviator. We begin in Atchison, Kansas, with a girl who wasn’t impressed by her first airplane, and follow her through her first flying lessons, her 1928 Atlantic crossing aboard the Friendship, and her record-breaking 1932 solo transatlantic flight to a pasture in Northern Ireland.
From there, we follow the Lockheed Electra 10-E, her “flying laboratory,” from Purdue University to the crash at Pearl Harbor, then eastward around the world across South America, Africa, India, and Southeast Asia to the small airfield at Lae. We sit with the radio operators aboard the Coast Guard cutter Itasca as Earhart’s final messages come in, “we must be on you, but cannot see you,” and listen through to her last transmission on the line 157-337.
Finally, we walk through the largest search in U.S. history up to that time and the theories that followed: the crash-and-sink hypothesis near Howland Island, the Nikumaroro (Gardner Island) castaway theory and the bones found there in 1940, the Japanese capture theory, the declassified Earhart files released by the National Archives, and the 2026 Taraia Object expedition searching Nikumaroro’s lagoon.
Whether you love aviation history, unsolved mysteries, or just need something soothing to fall asleep to, this episode is designed to help you relax, unwind, and rest.
