Tonight, drift off to the four-thousand-year history of chocolate: from a bitter, sacred drink poured for Aztec emperors to the candy bar in your kitchen drawer. Gentle narration and steady rain.
Long before chocolate was sweet, it was sacred. It grew in the shade of Mesoamerican rainforests as Theobroma cacao — food of the gods — and it was drunk cold, bitter, and spiced with chili by warriors, priests, and kings. Its beans were counted out as currency. When Columbus first encountered them, he had no idea what he was looking at, and let them go.
Over five slow chapters, this episode follows that small bitter seed across four thousand years and every ocean it crossed: the Maya and Aztec worlds where cacao was worship and wealth; the Spanish court that added sugar and quietly kept the secret for a century; the London chocolate houses where fortunes changed hands; the Dutch press, the first solid bar in Bristol, the milk chocolate breakthrough in a Swiss village, and the Pennsylvania town Milton Hershey built around a factory. Then through two world wars, ration bars engineered to taste deliberately unpleasant, the shift of the world's cacao harvest to West Africa, and the labor, climate, and fair trade questions the industry still hasn't answered.
It's a long story, and a heavy one in places, but like everything here, it's told gently, and it's meant to be slept through.
Sleepless History is real, researched history narrated slowly over ambient sound, made for people with curious minds and restless nights. New episodes drop every week, sometimes more.
