In this episode of Hidden Guzheng Echoes, I share Spring Stream in the Valley, a work composed by Xu Disheng.
The piece carries elements of the Chaozhou guzheng tradition, with a tonal flavor similar to the Qing San Liu mode. It presents a bright and refined musical character, both lively and elegant.
The music portrays a spring stream in motion — at times rushing forward with energy, and at other moments flowing gently and winding through the valley.
What I find most compelling is the sense of natural breathing within the sound, where movement and stillness coexist, and the listener is drawn into a quiet, unfolding space.
