The Philosophy of Nietzsche and Living by Your Own Values for Sleep

Dela

In the quiet stillness before sleep, this calm philosophy episode explores Friedrich Nietzsche and the freedom of living by your own values. Late in his life, Nietzsche asked a question almost no one had thought to ask. For centuries, philosophers had debated which things are good and which are bad. Nietzsche stepped back further and asked something stranger: where did our values come from in the first place, and what is their worth? He suspected that much of what we call morality was not handed down from the heavens, but made, inherited from cultures and crowds, then mistaken for the nature of things. Tonight, beside an old set of scales resting still on a table, we ask whose measures we are truly living by.

Many of us live by standards we never examined, straining to meet measures that were never really ours. Nietzsche offered a bolder understanding. His free spirit dares to weigh the values it was handed, keeping what genuinely rings true, releasing what does not, and daring to become a creator of its own values rather than a mere follower of received ones. This is not license to do anything, but a deeper responsibility: to live by what you have honestly found true, and to answer to yourself.

There is nothing you must weigh tonight. You are free to live by what you yourself find true, and you can lay the borrowed measures down and rest in a life weighed from within, as you drift into sleep.
