Gen 28: Bethel not Babel

Dr. Zvi Shimon joins The Bible Bar to explore the striking connections between Jacob’s dream at Bethel and the Tower of Babel. Both stories feature a structure whose top reaches heaven, but they offer radically different accounts of how heaven and earth are joined.
Along the way, we consider why this short episode has played such an outsized role in biblical scholarship, from source criticism and Gunkel’s understanding of sanctuary legends to synchronic readings of the Jacob cycle. We also examine the shifts between the divine names YHWH and Elohim and ask whether features traditionally attributed to different sources might instead serve distinct purposes within the narrative.
Finally, we turn to Jacob’s unusual habit of erecting pillars. The pillar he sets up after his dream echoes the stability of the stairway itself, and subsequent pillars mark the fulfillment of the promises Jacob receives at Bethel: divine protection, return to the land, and progeny. The dream of Genesis 28 thus reaches forward through the rest of Jacob’s story.
