Last night, at 9:08 PM, the United States Secretary of Defense, or as he now calls himself, the Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, took to social media to humiliate a member of one of our closest allies' militaries. Or at least that's what he thought he was doing when he shared a photograph with the caption "(this is real)," apparently expecting millions to laugh at the body of the person in uniform. Instead, in one extraordinarily stupid post, Hegseth exposed something much more disturbing about himself. Because the photograph wasn't Canada's military at all. It was a youth cadet program for children 12 to 18 in Vernon, British Columbia.

The Breakdown:

  • Hegseth mocked a photo he thought showed Canada's military. It was a youth cadet program showing a child being awarded a medal by a volunteer
  • Canadian officials responded swiftly, with PM Mark Carney calling it "beneath their office" and an MP reminding him 158 Canadian troops died in Afghanistan after the U.S. was attacked
  • The Pentagon did not take it down, apologize, or explain why the Secretary of War was looking at children's bodies
  • Hegseth's 2018 email from his own mother, read on the Senate floor: "You are an abuser of women"
  • He was confirmed by a single vote, with JD Vance breaking the tie, after refusing to answer whether abuse would disqualify a defense secretary
  • NBC reporting on colleagues' concerns about his drinking, and how his wife now travels with him as an adviser staffers call "The Leash"
  • The Signal leak of Yemen strike war plans, which the Pentagon inspector general said risked "potential harm to US pilots"
  • Reciting a Pulp Fiction monologue at a Pentagon prayer service, presenting it as scripture
  • The February 28 strike on the Shajareye Tayabeh girls school in Minab, Iran, killing at least 156 people including 110 children, which U.S. investigators concluded American forces likely caused
  • A classified document showing six four-star commanders formally warned the Iran war is unsustainable
  • The U.S. depleting more than half of its cruise missiles and advanced air-defense missiles in six months, pulling assets from South Korea and Japan
  • 82nd Airborne deployments extended to 12 months, into 2027
  • Hegseth firing or forcing out more than two dozen senior officers and the Stars and Stripes journalists who are now suing him
  • Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll resigning, leaving the largest branch of the military with no Senate-confirmed civilian leadership
  • The contrast with Eisenhower, who visited the paratroopers before D-Day and wrote a note taking full personal responsibility for a failure that never came
