Beneath fractured ice, the pumps of Pressure Vault Seven are failing, turning its frozen seafloor gallery into a countdown toward catastrophic pressure collapse. The last breach team of the 3rd Vault Engineering Battalion descends into a dead forest of Stiltmaw to recover a captured first officer and destroy the defector’s hybridization apparatus. They begin by cutting a new route through hardened resin because every obvious path has been rigged against them.

The dead Stiltmaw still respond to seismic vibration with blind telescoping strikes, while dormant larvae rise through the sediment toward the nearest movement. The defector has turned the soldiers’ own footsteps into a targeting system—and spliced the first officer into alien tissue as a living seismic map of the vault.
