Peter Gorschlüter - a museum for the people

Dela

In the new episode of one.voice, Fabian is in conversation with Peter Gorschlüter, director of the Museum Folkwang in Essen.

Founded in 1902 by the art patron Karl Ernst Osthaus, the Museum Folkwang was created as a bridge between people and art, with the vision of making art accessible as a means of education and personal development. In this episode, we discuss how this founding idea can be interpreted today, how the museum’s new building by David Chipperfield contributes to this mission, and what role the museum’s circle of friends and recent acquisitions play in shaping its future.

Peter also talks about his own journey — from developing small, independent exhibition projects to curating major museum exhibitions. We explore the large collection of the Museum Folkwang, the process of selecting new works and themes from such a rich archive, and how a museum can remain relevant in the future.

Finally, we discuss sustainability in the museum context: how exhibitions can be produced more responsibly and sustainably while maintaining the highest standards of quality and experience.

The conversation is in German.
