Tonight's show I sit down with Chris Kelly of @oldworldex Old World Exploration city-by-city surveys of surviving and destroyed architecture, official construction dates that cannot account for the fabric, and civic buildings that disappear from the landscape after a brief documented life.
Chris has spent years assembling North American and overseas streetscapes: San Francisco, Brooklyn, Johannesburg, Madrid, Helena, Indianapolis, and more than a hundred other files. Three volumes on demolished buildings in Old World North America. A separate study of lost courthouses. Recently he has been examining asylums and orphan trains as institutions that appear in the same period as the rebuild narratives.
We will set his plates beside the last few programs on this channel: the absence of original sanitation in monumental buildings, vacant ceremonial streets and retouched skies, staged photographs, buried ground floors and raised grades, and the clustered urban fires after which official chronologies are reset.
History needs to be investigated — not taken at face value.
