I spent a full year working as hard as I ever had. Pouring everything into the team, the outcomes, the work. Then I sat down for my year-end review and looked at the ranking.

Exactly where we had been twelve months earlier.

So I made the wrong decision. I decided to work harder. Not because I had a better strategy or a clearer direction. Because I needed to prove something. And that decision didn't just cost me another year of results. It slowly cost me the joy in the work, and eventually the ability to tell the difference between what I actually wanted and what I thought I was supposed to want.

This episode is about the difference between ambition and ego, and why most people can't tell them apart until something stops working.

Ambition is drive rooted in purpose. It knows what it's building and why. It can absorb a bad year without collapsing because the foundation underneath it isn't made of results. Ego is drive rooted in how you appear to others. It doesn't get quieter when things go wrong. It gets louder. It works harder. It doubles down. Because if it stops performing, it has to face the question it has been avoiding.

Andrew gets into what ego-driven ambition actually costs over time, how burnout really happens, the question he now asks before every major decision, and what it looks like to slowly rebuild something more honest underneath the performance.

The goal isn't to eliminate ambition. The goal is to root it in something that doesn't require external validation to stay alive.

Is there something you're currently chasing that you would stop if there was no audience watching?
