There is no distinction between life and art for artist, organizer, and filmmaker Joen Vedel. Being affected by and responding to interruptions—both those coming from the wider world and those unfolding in his personal life—is central to his artistic practice and to the practice-based PhD he recently completed at the Trondheim Academy of Fine Arts in Norway.
Weaving together conversations recorded in different places over an extended period of time, host Rosa Marie Frang allows Joen to interrupt himself as connections emerge between documentary filmmaking, live video editing, political revolts, sabotage, and life that just happens—underlining why following pre-scheduled plans isn’t always the best plan there is.
About:
Joen Vedel (he/him) has a background in activism and long-term collaborative commitments. His work encompasses critical media archives, film, installation, text, performance, curation, facilitation, and various open-ended forms of collaborations.
With an acute sensitivity to the relation between content, context and form, his work often deals with the liminal spaces between the personal and the political; between major and minor events, and the possibilities of grasping them while they unfold.
Joen is educated at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Whitney Independent Study Program in New York and Maumaus Independent Study Program in Lisbon. In 2025, he obtained his PhD from Trondheim Academy of Fine Arts, Norway.
