In 1983, a blocked drain in a quiet North London house exposed Dennis Nilsen, the MuswellHill Murderer, who confessed to killing as many as sixteen young men. Behind his dull civil-servant exterior was a man who said he killed because he couldnot bear to be alone. This week on Deadly Intent, we trace his life from a Scottish fishing harbor to the Old Bailey. We examine his childhood loss, his detachment, his ritual, and why the system failed the survivors who tried tospeak up. Then we ask the question at the heart of the case: was he insane, or simply evil?
