What does dental lab growth look like when you choose your lane on purpose?
In Episode 25, Small Target, Big Growth, I share the talk I prepared for NOLA LabFest: a conversation about dental laboratory specialization, automation, and the responsibility that stays with us as the work changes.
I'm John Wilson, owner of Sunrise Dental Laboratory in Yucaipa, California. After 43 years in this trade, I've learned that a growing lab can still leave its owner with less room to breathe. I talk about the cost of chasing the next opportunity, what full-arch implant work has taught me about depth, and why a narrow specialty still requires people who understand the whole case.
We look at four kinds of consolidation—ownership, purchasing, production and judgment—and what they mean for independent dental labs and the technicians doing the work. I also share an automated step that went from sixteen minutes to forty seconds, and ask the question that matters afterward: where does a person still have to say yes or no?
In this episode:
• Dental lab specialization and deliberate growth
• Consolidation and the changing independent laboratory
• Full-arch implant dentistry, difficult cases and earning trust
• Digital workflows, automation and verification
• Training technicians to understand the whole case
• Learning from remakes and building useful mentorship relationships
• Passing on the reasoning behind the work
This episode is for lab owners, dental technicians and anyone thinking about what comes next for this trade.
This is the version I recorded before NOLA LabFest. You'll hear me address the room and refer to a few visuals from the presentation. The complete prepared talk is included, with a podcast introduction and closing music. Running time: 49:27.
