In this episode, I’m sitting down with Kyle Brazeal an 11-year West Hollywood resident running for West Hollywood City Council — but this conversation is really about something much bigger than one city or one campaign: why local politics matter so much in our everyday lives.
We spend a lot of time focused on national politics — and of course, those elections matter. But the decisions that affect your daily life most directly often happen much closer to home. Your city council, county officials, school board, and local commissions help decide what gets built, what gets funded, how streets are designed, how homelessness is addressed, how small businesses are supported, how safe neighborhoods feel, and whether residents actually have a voice in the process.
If you’ve ever wondered why a bike lane suddenly appears on your street, why traffic patterns change, why housing developments get approved, why storefronts sit empty, why it takes months to open a small business, why homelessness is handled the way it is, or why certain neighborhoods seem to get attention while others are ignored — that’s local politics.
Kyle and I use his campaign for West Hollywood City Council as a way to talk about the bigger picture: how local government works, why transparency and accountability matter, and why it’s so important for everyday people to pay attention before decisions are already made.
At the heart of this episode is a simple question: Who is making decisions about your community — and are you paying attention?
This episode is a reminder that local elections are not “small” elections. They determine the quality of your roads, sidewalks, parks, housing, public safety, business districts, and neighborhood services. They shape what your community feels like when you walk out your front door.
National politics may dominate the headlines, but local politics shapes your block.
No matter where you live, I hope this episode encourages you to get involved in your own local elections — learn who is running, ask questions, show up to meetings, volunteer if you can, and vote for the leadership you want shaping your community.
