Tyla has two Grammys, a song that broke a 55-year-old chart record, and a reputation as one of pop’s most disliked women right now. This video is my attempt to work out how all of that happened to the same person in just three years.
We go through everything: the 2020 TikTok where she called herself a coloured South African, and what that word means where she’s from; the Breakfast Club interview where Charlamagne asked her about it and she said nothing.
The VMA trophy she called heavy. Armon Wiggins calling her an entitled, uppity African, and Joe Budden agreeing with him on his podcast. The tour she cancelled two weeks before her debut album, and the injury she still hasn’t explained. And the ten seconds at the 2026 Met Gala when she stood near Rihanna, didn’t say hi, then explained herself—and somehow made it worse.
Then the numbers, because the loudest claim about her now is that she’s flopping. So I checked: A*Pop against her debut, the WWP figure that started it all, the ticket-sales rumour that was fact-checked but still won’t die, and what the charts show versus what people decided they showed.
