🌿 Five Minutes of Zen
Be the Master of Your Mind Wherever You Are
A Zen Lesson from Bonsai and Life
Day 560 🌿
Tokyo, Japan
Good morning from Tokyo, Japan.
Today, once again, I would like to share a quiet moment with my bonsai and a lesson from Zen.
My Asahiyama Sakura has still not bloomed.
Every morning I look at it, hoping to see its first flowers.
But instead of blossoms, I see something even quieter.
Its roots continue to grow beneath the soil.
The moss remains alive.
Although nothing dramatic appears on the surface, life continues its work in silence.
Zen has a famous teaching:
“Wherever you are, be the master of your own mind.”
This means that we should not allow our surroundings, our successes, or our disappointments to control our hearts.
The weather changes.
People’s opinions change.
Results change.
But our own mind does not have to be carried away by every change around us.
Looking at my bonsai reminds me that growth is often invisible.
Just because we cannot see progress today does not mean that nothing is happening.
The roots are becoming stronger.
The tree is preparing for its own season.
Perhaps our lives are the same.
Sometimes we wait for success.
Sometimes we wait for recognition.
Sometimes we wait for flowers that seem slow to bloom.
Zen gently reminds us not to compare our journey with anyone else’s.
Every tree has its own season.
Every person has their own path.
Our task is simply to continue caring for our roots with patience and sincerity.
Today, my bonsai taught me that inner peace is more valuable than outward success.
When our mind remains calm, even waiting becomes part of the journey.
Thank you for spending these quiet moments with me.
