Right, so Benjamin Netanyahu has an election to get through in just two weeks time now, and his spin doctor has just at this moment come along with a rather inconvenient problem of his own. Such good timing.
People are passing around WhatsApps attributed to him you see.
His name is Yonatan Urich and Israeli news site Haredim 10 has reported that as a result of these messages going public, he’s threatening no less than ten lawsuits, while his lawyers allege hacking and altered conversations.
So the man helping Netanyahu decide what to say to voters is now facing questions about what he’s supposedly been saying in private.
You see the speech or the television appearance. What you don’t see is the work going on beforehand: people discussing how to present Netanyahu, which argument to make, what might persuade voters. Urich’s professional dealings sit close to that process.
If relevant correspondence can be authenticated, it could show some of those workings. That gives this a political significance beyond the usual grubby pleasure of reading somebody else’s messages.
And his dealings were already attracting attention before any of this appeared online. Netanyahu’s adviser circle had already come under scrutiny in the separate Qatar investigation from last year from which Urich is also allegedly involved in.
