This episode follows the making and remaking of the Laozi, the text later known as the Daodejing or, in older Wade-Giles spelling, the Tao Te Ching. It opens with Guodian bamboo slips from a tomb context dated around 300 BCE, where material corresponding to portions of the later Laozi appears in partial groupings rather than as the familiar complete classic. Among those materials is a passage later numbered chapter twenty-five, describing something difficult to name before heaven and earth and ending with the problem of ziran, often translated as naturalness, spontaneity, or “so of itself.”

The investigation traces how Laozi-related sayings entered Warring States debates about rule, desire, order, and wuwei, often rendered as nonaction but better understood in many contexts as noncoercive or unforced action. It then follows successive documentary witnesses: early interpretation in the Han Feizi, Sima Qian’s Han-era biography of Laozi, the Mawangdui silk manuscripts sealed in 168 BCE with De material before Dao material, Han classifications of a “Way” school, Wang Bi’s third-century commentary, the Heshanggong tradition, Xiang’er and Dunhuang fragments, and Tang and Song stone inscriptions.

The competing interpretations remain open. Traditional and religious readings may revere Laozi and understand the Dao as the generative Way. Historical readings emphasize textual plurality, variant arrangements, and later attribution. The unresolved question is not a simple reveal, but a genuine historical tension: did a teacher stand behind some early sayings, or did generations of transmitters create Laozi as the voice of a teaching no single person authored?
