What does it take for people to thrive when work already feels overloaded and AI is adding another layer of change?

In this episode of the People Leader Accelerator Podcast, Andrew Bartlow and Jess Yuen are joined by Aoife O'Brien, author of Thriving Talent, for a conversation about burnout, psychological safety, leadership and the environments organizations create around performance.

Aoife argues that workplace challenges are too often treated as problems that need to be fixed at the individual level. Employees do have responsibility for setting boundaries, asking for support and seeking clarity, but organizations also need to examine workload, expectations, management practices and whether people feel safe enough to speak honestly about what is happening.

AI adds another dimension to that challenge. It can reduce manual work and accelerate tasks, but it can also create new demands through prompting, providing context, monitoring outputs and correcting mistakes.

In this episode, Andrew, Jess and Aoife discuss:

  • Why AI can reduce workload in some areas while adding to it in others
  • How unclear expectations can contribute to stress and burnout
  • What leaders and managers should look for when high performers are approaching burnout
  • Why psychological safety is different from psychological comfort
  • How organizations can maintain high standards without creating fear
  • The role managers play in developing people while still delivering results
  • Why thriving talent depends on the environment around people, not simply individual resilience

Aoife also explains her Thriving Talent framework, which places psychological safety at the foundation and builds on culture, individual drivers, capabilities and leadership.

One of the central themes of the conversation is that thriving does not simply mean creating happy or comfortable employees. It means building an environment where people can speak honestly, use their strengths, develop their capabilities and sustain high performance.

For People leaders navigating AI adoption, workload pressure and an increasingly demanding workplace, this episode offers a practical way to think about the conditions that help talent perform at its best.
