Bananas are Evil | Hoppy Thoughts Podcast | Episode #47

Dela

A Boston fruit company owned Guatemala's port, its telegraph lines, and more farmland than it could plant. When President Jacobo Árbenz moved to redistribute the idle acreage in 1952, he offered compensation at the valuation United Fruit had claimed on its own tax filings. The company went to Washington instead. Two years later, Operation PBSUCCESS put Árbenz on a plane and Guatemala on a path to a 36-year civil war with roughly 200,000 dead. We trace the whole arc: Minor Keith's railroad concession, Edward Bernays turning land reform into a Red Scare headline, the Dulles brothers' undisclosed law firm ties, and the corporate lineage running from United Fruit to Chiquita and its 2007 guilty plea. Plus the plant biology: why Cavendish bananas are clones, what killed Gros Michel, and why Tropical Race 4 is coming for the replacement.
