Something Special After (If You Like):
In this episode of Mild Mannered Supermen, we continue our journey through Genesis's 1978 album …And Then There Were Three… with two very different Tony Banks compositions: “Many Too Many” and “The Lady Lies.”
We begin with “Many Too Many,” one of Tony Banks's most melodic and emotionally direct songs of the era. Beneath its beautiful arrangement is a melancholy story of a relationship coming apart—and a glimpse of the shorter, more accessible songwriting that would become increasingly important to Genesis in the years ahead.
The song also marks a significant moment in Genesis history: a farewell to the Mellotron. After helping define the majestic sound of classic Genesis on albums like Foxtrot, Selling England by the Pound, A Trick of the Tail, and Wind & Wuthering, the instrument makes its final appearance on a Genesis studio album here. We look back at the unmistakable sound of the Mellotron and what its disappearance symbolizes about a band rapidly evolving beyond its progressive-rock past.
Then we enter the strange and seductive world of “The Lady Lies.” Tony Banks returns to the kind of fantasy storytelling that defined so much early Genesis, creating a tale of temptation, deception, and a man who discovers that the beautiful woman before him may not be quite what she seems.
Together, the two songs capture Genesis at a fascinating crossroads. “The Lady Lies” looks backward toward the elaborate storytelling and musical complexity of classic Genesis, while “Many Too Many” points forward toward the concise, emotional songwriting that would become increasingly prominent on Duke and beyond.
And somewhere between the two, we say goodbye to an old friend.
Farewell, Mellotron. You served Genesis well.
