Expect Nothing. Appreciate Everything.
What if some of your frustration with life isn't actually about what's happening—but about the invisible rules you've created for how you believe it should be happening?
For years, I've repeated four words to myself and my clients:
Expect nothing. Appreciate everything.
I understood the idea intellectually. But recently, during one of the most uncertain seasons of my life, I realized something: I wasn't necessarily embodying it.
Underneath so many of my disappointments were expectations.
My business should be further along.
My marriage should look different.
I should be making more money.
My life should look a certain way by now.
And then it hit me:
Life never agreed to any of those rules.
In this episode of (re)Parenting Radio, we explore the invisible rulebook we carry through life, where our “shoulds” come from, and how expectations can quietly make our peace dependent upon circumstances and other people.
We also explore:
- Expectations vs. preferences, intentions, standards, and boundaries
- Why “everything is information” has become one of my most powerful practices
- The freedom inside the question “Now what?”
- Why accepting reality isn't the same as liking it
- How to feel disappointment without spiritually bypassing it
- The childhood, cultural, and societal rules we may still be living by
- The rules we unknowingly pass down to our children
- The difference between intellectually knowing something and actually embodying it
Because we can't always choose what information life gives us.
But we can participate in what happens next.
