DSLR vs Mirrorless: Why I Still Use Both (and the Camera I Wish Nikon Would Make) Over the years I’ve gone back and forth on optical viewfinders vs electronic viewfinders, DSLRs vs mirrorless. After shooting professionally and personally with both, I landed here: I like using both — just in different situations. I started on optical viewfinders (film and DSLR). That still feels like home. When mirrorless arrived I tried it — first the Nikon 1 system, then the Z system. I now shoot a Nikon D750 as my main body and a Z6 on every job. Nikon’s FTZ adapter lets me use the same F-mount lenses on both, so I haven’t bought native Z glass. Why I still reach for the OVF / DSLR No “exposure jumping” in the viewfinder when you pan from bright to dark. Flash and strobe work more naturally (the EVF advantage mostly disappears). Fast, natural feel for bright outdoor action and events. The focusing on a well-calibrated modern DSLR is still excellent for how I shoot. Why I still use the EVF / Z6 See exposure, white balance, and contrast before you shoot. Silent shutter (great at concerts). Eye/face tracking when I want it. Compact when I need it. I wouldn’t want to give either one up. They’re different tools. The camera I’d actually buy A mid-size body (think D750 or Zf size) with a native F-mount, sensor set further back like a DSLR, and an EVF — no FTZ adapter. Use your existing F-mount lenses (AI, AIS, AF-D, G) natively on a mirrorless body. Or go further: an F-mount body with both an OVF and EVF that can flip out of the way. There are millions of F-mount lenses out there. That hybrid would bridge the two worlds for people who don’t want to abandon them. If I had to pick only one system today, I’d still choose the optical viewfinder and DSLR. That’s where I learned and what I enjoy most — not a technical argument, just preference. What do you think? Would you use a native F-mount mirrorless? Drop your thoughts in the comments.
