After Decades of Lessons and Lingering in a Small Town We’re Finally Choosing a Fresh Start on Kauai

We’re moving. After years of back-and-forth, lists, and honest conversations, we’re laying out the real, personal reasons we’re leaving Tonasket and Okanogan County for Kauai. These aren’t generic complaints about rural life — they’re our specific experiences with weather, community dynamics, completed growth cycles, and deep personal history that no longer fits who we’ve become.

What we get into:

• Extreme temperature swings, gray winters that drag on mental health, fire season smoke, and wind that make the environment feel increasingly brutal instead of beautiful
• How small-town history follows you — old versions of yourself, rumors, judgments, and events from ten or twenty years ago that people won’t let go of, even when you’ve done the work
• A community scarcity mindset that caps what’s possible for a health and fitness business, plus limited opportunities to volunteer without drama or being chewed up for being human
• The feeling that this chapter has genuinely run its course — lessons were learned here, growth happened, and now it’s time for a new beginning where the evolved versions of ourselves can exist without the constant ball and chain of the past
• Lack of low-key entertainment and social options that don’t come with sideways comments, gossip chains, or scanning the room for who you might run into
• Deep personal and family trauma tied to the area that makes staying — and even visiting — painful and unsustainable for us and our kids

We’re not claiming these issues are unique to this place or that we won’t face challenges anywhere we land. We’re saying this specific combination of weather, history, community fit, and personal pain has reached its limit for us. We’ve done the work. The cycle is complete. Now we get to cut what no longer serves and step into a fresh start where the better versions of ourselves can actually breathe.
