In the world's largest study of ayahuasca for depression and anxiety, the results are stunning:
1. 78% of people with depression reported major improvement or full resolution.
2. Nearly one in three said their depression was completely gone.
3. For anxiety? 70% showed significant improvement.
But what's even more fascinating is the new model of healing the scientists uncovered.
Not the old path of drug → chemical change → symptom change.
Instead: Medicine → altered state → new meaning → new symptoms.
In this episode I break down the Global Ayahuasca Project, one of the largest datasets ever collected on ayahuasca use. This is not a clinical trial, but a cross-sectional, self-reported study across more than 50 countries. It gives us a wide, real-world picture of who is drinking, in what settings, and what they say happened afterward.
Reported outcomes for depression and anxiety
Within the subgroup of participants who had diagnosed depression or anxiety, a large majority reported meaningful improvement after ayahuasca. Some reported that their symptoms were “completely resolved,” which is a strong claim in psychiatric terms. At the same time, a small percentage reported worsening symptoms. We look at both sides without exaggeration or dismissal.
Why mystical experience and insight mattered
The data shows a clear pattern: people who reported deeper, more intense experiences also reported greater improvements. This included feelings of unity, emotional breakthroughs, and personal insights about their lives.
The meaning-making model of healing
This study points toward a different mechanism than standard medication models. Instead of directly reducing symptoms through chemistry alone, the process seems to move through insight, emotional processing, and reinterpretation of personal history. The altered state opens access, but the shift comes from what the person understands and integrates. Healing, in this frame, is something the psyche actively participates in.
Why screening, setting, and integration matterThe outcomes are not happening in a vacuum. Who the person is, their mental health history, the environment they are in, and the support they have before and after all shape the result.
