Alexander Zverev just claimed his first U.S. Open title with a thrilling four-set win over Ben Shelton, capping off an extraordinary year that also included the French Open and a Wimbledon final appearance. What made it even more hilarious? Zverev didn’t realize he’d won—he thought the score was 5-1! Shelton, carrying historic hopes as the first American Grand Slam winner since 2003 and the first Black U.S. Open champ since Arthur Ashe, battled valiantly amid roaring support. Zverev delivered a classy post-match speech, even joking about Shelton’s girlfriend Trinity Rodman. Shelton, gracious in defeat, called the experience unforgettable and praised Zverev as one of the game’s all-time greats.
