At the core of every man’s life, there is a thread.

Following this thread leads toward authentic expression, right service, creativity, meaningful contribution, and the feeling that your life is actually correct, in integrity, and true.

This thread contains your values, your innate gifts, your particular way of being, and the medicine you carry for the world.

You could call it your purpose, your dharma, your destiny, or simply your inner direction.

The thread is the part of you that knows what is yours to do in life.

But for most men, especially “high-achievers,” it was forcibly abandoned at an earlier time in life where it didn’t seem like a choice.

This wasn’t because they made some obvious mistake, or because they were weak, cowardly, or morally deficient, but instead because that’s how we’re all trained to survive.

The bargain we were offered

Our culture is not designed to help us men discover and follow our unique inner direction.

It is instead designed to reproduce itself.

It rewards people who conform to its existing structures, accept its definitions of success, and move toward its sanctioned ideals:

* Be responsible

* Choose the safe path

* Get the right job

* Make enough money

* Buy the house

* Accumulate status

* Do what is expected of you

None of these things are inherently wrong, but we were taught to pursue them before we had any deep and true relationship with the core of our selves.

The old cultural bargain went something like this:

Give up your thread, and we will make it almost worth it.

Practice enough self-abandonment on behalf of the larger cultural project, and you will receive stability, belonging, status, property, vacations, season tickets, two cars, and the approximation of being the king of your own life.

For a while, that bargain appeared to work.

A man could distance himself from his own nature and still receive enough external compensation to keep the deeper questions quiet.

But the bargain is breaking down, more and more these days it seems.

The house is no longer cheap, the career is no longer stable, and the institutions no longer inspire trust. The future no longer appears predictable, or even a credible idea at all.

Meanwhile, we are still being asked to abandon our thread.

There is nothing wrong with you

If you are on a ragged edge, if you have felt stuck for a long time, or if you cannot seem to force yourself forward on the same path, there may not be anything fundamentally wrong with you.

Instead it’s that you’re waking up to the fact this bargain is breaking down.

And also, there’s the fact that you were never shown how to find, trust, follow and act on this thread.

Perhaps you do not even have a stance toward life that allows for something to “want to happen through you.”

Instead you were taught to make plans, set goals, solve problems, and impose your will on reality to get what you want and need.

Those capacities matter, but there is another masculine faculty that has largely been forgotten in the modern age.

It is the faculty of tracking - listening, waiting, and hunting.

It requires creating enough inner emptiness to perceive what is actually there.

Some people hear words like dreamwork, inner listening, and receptivity and call them feminine, but I disagree with that framing.

Is it feminine for a man to track an animal?

The hunter does not impose himself upon the animal’s path.

Instead he becomes quiet enough to recognize its signs and follows it.

Listening with his whole body, he notices what animal has passed through and where it is going.

This is not passivity, but instead disciplined attention, and it’s exactly what we need if we’re going to find the thread again and follow it.

The inward turn is not an escape

This inward turn is not about abandoning achievement, contribution, responsibility, or service to the whole.

It is not about disappearing into endless self-analysis, narcissism, or inner work cul-de-sacs.

It is not about becoming emotionally preoccupied and incapable of acting.

It is about getting real with some tough questions:

* Am I actually being useful in the world for where it’s going now?

* Is my current work an authentic expression of my real gifts? Or am I perpetuating old trauma, inherited madness, and unconscious conditioning?

* Am I serving life? Or merely serving the machinery of what already exists?

We’re not trying to forsake the external world, but instead to put the inner and outer in the correct order.

First, we have to rebuild a relationship with what is true at our core.

Then, and only then do we take action.

First, the thread, then, the work.

The alternative is either endless achievement with no Self-connection, or endless introspection with no contribution.

We know that both alone are dead ends.

A meaningful life requires living in the tension of external contribution AND inner connection.

The world will not be the way it was

The world we were promised is not the world we are entering or even have been in since 2016 or thereabouts.

The old structures are disappearing, old guarantees are gone.

You can feel this economically, politically, culturally, psychologically, and ecologically.

If you have no relationship with your inner direction, you will be lost in the noise.

You will be pulled from one crisis, opinion, fear, and distraction to another.

This is the fate of the “mass man,” to use Ortega’s phrase.

The mass man will attempt to find stability through external certainty at the exact moment external certainty is becoming less available.

The alternative is not to magically know exactly what will happen, but instead to decide to create a relationship with what is yours to do within it.

That means coming back to the thread, over and over.

Said a simpler way:

There’s something in you that knows what to do now. You just need to slow down enough to hear it, and then have the courage and containment to act on it.

In me, the more I focus on following the thread, no matter how choppy the outside waves are, the more I feel calm, steady, and certain.

I do not always know where it is leading.

But I understand how the thread speaks to me.

And I trust it because it’s gotten me this far and frankly I like my life, what it’s about and what I get to do and be a part of.

Following the thread hasn’t let me down.

I understand the signals that tell me I am following it - aliveness, enthusiasm, focus, meaning, and flow.

And I do not believe I am special for having this - every man has access to it.

The question is whether he can hear it - which often necessitates this deprogramming process we’re speaking of here.

What is the thread of your life?

I invite you to sit with a few questions.

* What is the thread at the core of your life?

* Are you connected with it? Is it obvious to you?

* Do you know what it is asking of you now?

* What have you repeatedly abandoned in order to remain safe, respectable, or approved of?

* When have you felt most alive, absorbed, and genuinely useful?

* What keeps returning, despite your attempts to dismiss it?

* What part of your life feels done, over, complete?

* What truth would require you to change if you fully admitted it?

* And what is one concrete act of loyalty to the thread you could take this week?

You do not need a ten-year plan, absolute certainty, or a more impressive identity.

You just need :

* enough space to recognize what is already moving within you,

* enough trust to take it seriously,

* and enough courage to act.

If this resonates, I created a free masterclass that goes much deeper into why men lose contact with this thread, why many eventually reach a threshold where the old way of living becomes impossible, and how to begin finding their way forward again.
