Breaking the 180-degree rule doesn't simply create an interesting cinematic affect, it also permits the filmmakers to express theme sublingually, using cinematic form itself. We need to learn rules--not to follow them blindly, nor to break them willy-nilly--but to understand exactly what these rules express.
