“I need to save money.”
Most of us have said it. But what do we actually mean when we say it?
Do we mean spending less at restaurants? Finding cheaper insurance? Putting money into a savings account? Preparing for an emergency? Saving for Christmas? Or simply creating more breathing room in the monthly budget?
The phrase “save money” can describe a lot of different financial decisions—and understanding the difference can help you make better choices with the money God has entrusted to you.
In this episode of Financial Coaching for Kingdom Men, Jon kicks off a new series on saving by looking at the many different ways we use the phrase “save money” and why each one requires a different strategy.
What You’ll Learn
In this episode, you’ll learn:
Why spending less is not always the same as actually saving money
The difference between getting a discount and building savings
How lowering recurring expenses can improve monthly cash flow
Why avoiding waste is an important part of biblical stewardship
How setting money aside creates intentional preparation for the future
The difference between emergency savings and saving for known expenses
How savings buckets can help prepare for expenses like Christmas, car repairs, insurance premiums, and home maintenance
Why creating margin in your budget can reduce financial stress
How spending wisely today can sometimes prevent much larger expenses tomorrow
One important reminder from this episode:
Money you don’t spend isn’t automatically money you saved.
What Kind of Saving Do You Need?
Instead of simply saying, “I need to save more money,” ask yourself:
What problem am I actually trying to solve?
Do you need to reduce spending?
Build an emergency fund?
Prepare for a known expense?
Create more monthly margin?
Save for a specific goal?
Eliminate waste?
Lower recurring expenses?
Identifying the real goal makes it much easier to choose the right strategy.
Biblical Stewardship and Saving
Proverbs 21:20 says:
“Precious treasure and oil are in a wise man’s dwelling, but a foolish man devours it.”
Biblical saving is not about fear or trusting your bank account more than God.
It is about wisely managing what God has already placed in your hands.
Wise stewardship asks an important question:
Am I consuming everything God gives me today, or am I intentionally preparing for tomorrow?
The Big Takeaway
Saving money isn’t just about putting money into a savings account.
Saving is intentionally choosing not to consume everything you have today so that you are better prepared to steward tomorrow.
This episode begins a new series on saving. In the coming episodes, we’ll talk about emergency funds, savings goals, savings buckets, how much to save, where to keep savings, and how saving fits alongside giving, debt payoff, and enjoying the money God has entrusted to you.
