In 1954, a young Maine mother named Constance Fisher drowned her three children in a bathtub, then tried to take her own life. She was found not guilty by reason of insanity, spent five years in a state hospital, and was sent home "cured." Twelve years later, she did it again — three more children, the same method, the same house. This week, in the case that's been resurfacing everywhere since the Lindsay Clancy trial began dominating headlines, we go back to where this conversation actually started: postpartum psychosis, a legalsystem that didn't yet have the language for it, and a mental health system that mistook the absence of hallucinations for a cure. We trace what happened to Constance from her 1954 arrest through her 1966 re-arrest, her second insanity trial, and her death in 1973 — and we connect her case directly toAndrea Yates and Lindsay Clancy to show how much (and how little) has actually changed in seventy years.
Content warning: this episode discusses the deaths of children, severe mental illness, and suicide in detail.
