Forest City in Malaysia was designed to become a futuristic city for hundreds of thousands of people, but a combination of changing regulations, China's property crisis, the COVID-19 pandemic, and other challenges left huge portions of the development dramatically under-occupied. The result was a surreal landscape of towering apartments, beautiful landscaping, and unusually quiet streets that earned it the nickname “Ghost City.” But Forest City isn't actually abandoned, and its story is changing as new residents, businesses, and government-backed economic plans begin bringing activity back.
