🌑 Can scientists see inside living cells without shining a laser on them? A new microscopy technology called RIED may be opening that door.
Developed by researchers at Zhejiang University, RIED uses the faint glow produced by chemical reactions rather than intense external illumination. This “dark” approach dramatically reduces the phototoxicity and photobleaching that can limit conventional super-resolution microscopy. 🔬
The technology combines three forms of reaction-driven luminescence—electrochemiluminescence, chemiluminescence, and bioluminescence—with entropy-based image reconstruction. Its resolution reached as low as 97 nm, while bioluminescence-based imaging enabled continuous observation for up to 41 hours.
The result is more than sharper images. It could allow researchers to observe biological processes over much longer periods without constantly disturbing the cells they are studying. 🧬 The team even tracked how mitochondria move between cells, revealing distinct patterns of intracellular communication.
