Jo Cox was a Labour MP for Batley and Spen who was murdered on 16 June 2016 while arriving at a constituency surgery in Birstall, West Yorkshire. She was shot and stabbed by Thomas Mair, a man driven by far-right and white supremacist beliefs, and a pensioner who tried to help her was also injured. Mair was convicted of murder and sentenced to a whole-life prison term. Cox’s death shocked the UK because she was killed while serving her constituents, and her legacy is often summed up by her belief that people have “more in common” than what divides them.
