AI leaders are suddenly warning us that artificial intelligence could get loose, spiral out of control, and threaten humanity. But before we accept the fear campaign, we should ask a simple question: where is the actual explanation? Not the science fiction version. Not the vague talk about superintelligence. Not the religious-sounding warnings about digital gods and extinction. The real, practical, step-by-step scenario. What system fails first? What access does the AI have? How does it move from a model in a data center to a force that can hurt or kill people at scale?
At the same time, the frontier AI market is showing signs of fatigue. The latest models demo well, add useful features, and look impressive on stage, but the true capability leaps are not matching the hype. Progress appears more incremental, more expensive, and harder to sustain.
So maybe this sudden call to "slow down" is not purely about protecting humanity. Maybe the major AI companies know they were going to slow down anyway. If so, turning a technical and business slowdown into a moral stand is clever PR. But it is also insulting. We are not that stupid.
