In this episode of The Matt Richardson Podcast, I sit down with Lacey Marie for a deeply moving conversation about surviving severe childhood trauma, finding Jesus in the most unexpected places, and experiencing the radical restoration of a broken marriage.
Lacey’s childhood was filled with extreme instability—poverty, homelessness, drug abuse, and a father sent to prison. At just eight years old, while looking into a dumpster behind a donation center at night with her mother, Lacey’s eyes locked onto a painting of Jesus in a red robe. Though she didn't know who He was, her soul recognized Him. Two years later, after entering foster care following severe abuse, she walked into a church for the first time and saw that exact same painting on the wall.
Despite being adopted at 18 and marrying her husband, AJ, the unhealed wounds of her past began to surface years later. Misinterpreting true love, carrying deep insecurities, and convincing herself she didn't love her husband, Lacey fell into a dark season of emotional infidelity. Drowning in despair on her bathroom floor, she felt the Lord whisper a radical instruction: "Let go of your marriage, put it on the altar, and focus on Me."
Lacey walks us through what happened when she surrendered everything—waking up at 5 AM to study scripture, serving her community, and allowing Christ to pull her out of her personal hell. She also shares the remarkable grace of her husband, AJ, who chose forgiveness and protection over abandonment, allowing Jesus to heal both of their hearts and rebuild their marriage on a rock-solid foundation.
