In today's episode, Benefits of Reality TV, with Jessica Gottschalk, we unpack why reality TV hooks so many of us and why the label “guilty pleasure” can create shame that doesn’t belong. Jessica Gotchalk brings a clinical lens to fandom and helps us reframe these shows as connection, self-care, and low-stakes practice for real relationships.
• parasocial relationships as real comfort and belonging
• social comparison theory as emotional rehearsal for our own conflicts
• why reality TV fandom can build community through group chats and podcasts
• dropping the shame and calling it “pleasure pleasure”
• using fun as self-care without turning it into an obligation
• spotting the line between resting and numbing out
• empathy for reality stars under intense scrutiny and editing
• how conversations on race, class, and representation show up on Bravo
• rupture and repair as a relationship skill we can learn by watching
• what makes iconic moments stick in pop culture and why we love them
