Breathing Is Happening
What happens when a Zen Buddhist monk and an astrophysicist point toward the same mystery from completely different directions?
In this Dharma talk from Enlightened Life Fellowship, Breathing Is Happening, we explore the unexpected resonance between Thich Nhat Hanh’s teaching of interbeing and Neil deGrasse Tyson’s reflections on the cosmic origins of the elements that make up life.
Thich Nhat Hanh asks us to look deeply at something as ordinary as a sheet of paper and recognize that it cannot exist independently. Within it are the cloud, the rain, the sunlight, the tree, the soil, human labor, and countless other conditions. This is interbeing: nothing exists entirely by itself.
From another direction, astrophysics shows us that the elements within our bodies belong to the same physical history as the universe around us. Hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, nitrogen, and the other ingredients of life are part of a story that stretches through the early universe, the formation of stars and planets, the Earth, and eventually life itself.
The scientist and the mystic are not trying to prove one another.
They are not even asking the same questions.
But their ideas rhyme.
This talk explores Zen Buddhism, interdependence, mindfulness, meditation, consciousness, astrophysics, science and spirituality, impermanence, non-self, interconnectedness, the origins of life, the cosmic perspective, and the relationship between Buddhism and science.
At the center of the talk is a simple question: where exactly do we end and the rest of the universe begin?
Air is outside of us. Then it enters the body. Oxygen moves into the bloodstream. Moments later, the breath leaves again.
Again and again.
We do not have to imagine ourselves connected to the universe. We are already participating in it.
And perhaps meditation can begin not with the thought, “I am breathing,” but with the simpler recognition:
Breathing is happening.
Before philosophy, before belief, before meditation technique, and before we decide to pay attention, the breath is already present.
In this Applied Zen teaching, we move from a sheet of paper, to a cloud, to a tree, to the Earth, to the stars, to the elements within our bodies, and finally back to this breath.
The universe is not only somewhere above us in the night sky.
It is beneath our feet.
It is moving through our bodies.
It is passing through our lungs.
And for this moment, we are alive enough to notice.
This Dharma talk may be especially meaningful for listeners interested in Zen meditation, Buddhist philosophy, Thich Nhat Hanh, interbeing, mindfulness practice, breath meditation, spirituality and science, Neil deGrasse Tyson, astronomy and spirituality, cosmic consciousness, dependent origination, contemplative practice, practical Buddhism, modern Zen, and the science of being alive.
