The Great Sphinx of Giza is generally associated with Pharaoh Khafre and Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty, around 2500 BCE. Its setting beside Khafre’s pyramid complex, the Sphinx Temple, the Valley Temple, and the surrounding quarry landscape forms a powerful archaeological case for an Old Kingdom date.

Yet the monument has no surviving construction inscription explicitly naming its original builder. That absence, combined with deep fissures, rounded surfaces, and severe deterioration on parts of the Sphinx enclosure, created one of the most enduring disputes in ancient archaeology.

John Anthony West, drawing on earlier observations by R. A. Schwaller de Lubicz, argued that some of the enclosure weathering resulted from prolonged rainfall. Geologist Robert M. Schoch examined the site in the early 1990s and concluded that important features were more consistent with precipitation-induced weathering and runoff than with windblown sand alone. If that interpretation is correct, the Sphinx’s earliest carving phase could predate the Old Kingdom.

Other geologists and archaeologists point to uneven limestone beds, salt crystallization, ancient fractures, groundwater-related alteration, karst processes, episodic rainfall, and the monument’s long repair history. The question is not whether water affected the stone. It is when, how, and whether the key damage formed before or after the Sphinx was carved.

Was the Sphinx an Old Kingdom monument shaped by fragile geology and thousands of years of exposure? Or did Khafre’s builders inherit and transform something already ancient?
