Craving (Taṇhā) in Buddhism: Stop the Endless Thirst

Dela

No matter how much we achieve, acquire, or experience, the feeling of "not enough" often returns. According to the Buddha, this endless cycle is driven by a powerful force known as Taṇhā—the Pāli word for craving, thirst, or insatiable wanting. In his very first discourse, the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta (The Setting in Motion of the Wheel of Dhamma), the Buddha identified craving as the origin of suffering. Taṇhā is more than a simple desire. It is a deep psychological thirst that continually seeks satisfaction in things that can never provide lasting fulfillment. This brings us to what we might call the Saltwater Paradox.Imagine trying to quench your thirst by drinking saltwater. At first, it seems to help. But the more you drink, the thirstier you become. Craving works in much the same way. The more we chase pleasure, possessions, status, relationships, or experiences, the more longing and dissatisfaction tend to arise. This is the paradox of Taṇhā: the very thing we believe will satisfy us often becomes the source of further suffering. We seek fulfillment through craving, yet craving itself keeps the sense of lack alive. In this video, we will explore the Saltwater Paradox through the lens of Buddhist wisdom, the Pāli Canon, and modern psychology. Together, we will uncover how Taṇhā operates in the mind, why craving never satisfies, and how the Buddha's teachings point toward a path of genuine freedom, contentment, and inner peace.Referenced Scriptures:Verse 334, Verses 335 & 336, Verses 342 & 343, Verse 347, Verse 351 of the DhammapadaSN 12.61 AssutavāSN 47.7 MakkaṭasuttaSN 35.28 Ādittapariyāya SuttaSN 3.66 Salla SuttaSN 35.63 Migajala (1)AN 6.61 MajjhesuttaSNP 4.15 Attadanda Sutta--------Timestamps:00:00 Introduction03:27 Distinguishing Craving & Wholesome Intention06:45 The Three Forms of Craving-07:34 Sensual Craving09:51 Craving for Becoming 11:51 Craving for Non-Existence-13:46 The Buddha’s 11 Metaphors for Craving-15:07 Craving as a Creeping Vine17:37 Craving as Birana Grass21:02 The Monkey Mind24:07 The Trap of Attachment26:10 Everything Is Burning31:45 Craving as a Weaver36:16 The Trapped Rabbit37:49 The Spider in Its Web39:01 The Fish in a Drying Pond44:23 The Second Arrow49:12 The Companion-55:40 The Mechanism of Craving58:52 The Practice of Working with Craving--------🎙️ Narration: Daniel Ta🎶 Background Music: Deep Meaning by Liborio Conti✍️ Written & Researched by: Daniel Ta🎬 Video Editing & Production: Daniel Ta--------Hashtags#buddhistteachings #buddhistwisdom #craving #cravingcontrol #selfawareness #selfcare #selfimprovement #selfdiscovery #theravada #buddhistphilosophy #buddhistpsychology #buddhistwisdom #selfgrowth #buddhism
