A textual history and an author’s note regarding the specific use of runes and language. The story focuses on Bilbo Baggins, a comfort-loving creature whose quiet life is disrupted when the wizard Gandalf visits his home. Despite his protests, Bilbo is thrust into the role of a host for thirteen dwarves who arrive unannounced for a business meeting. Through music and song, the dwarves recount their tragic history and their quest to reclaim stolen treasure from a dragon. This evocative atmosphere awakens a hidden desire for adventure within Bilbo, conflicting with his naturally cautious and respectable personality. The provided excerpts conclude as Bilbo wavers between his domestic security and the dangerous lure of the wide world.
