Picture two houses. In one, newspapers are stacked to the ceiling and there’s barely a path to the bed. In the other, there are eleven bedrooms nobody sleeps in, a second mansion in Aspen, and more money than could be spent in a hundred lifetimes. We make reality TV about the first house and magazine covers about the second. One we call sick. The other we call successful.
In this episode, I make the case that hoarding wealth, power, and influence comes from the same place as hoarding stuff: the same fear, the same grip, the same belief that there will never be enough. All that changes is what the dragon treasures.
We talk about why we see hoarding so clearly in a cluttered home and refuse to see it in a billionaire’s portfolio. We talk about how the hoard at the top creates the scarcity that teaches everyone else to hold on. And we talk about the cure, which isn’t a bigger vault but a world built on circulation, where nobody needs one.
This isn’t about mocking anyone who struggles with hoarding. It’s about compassion for all of us, and asking why we cheer for one kind of dragon.
This week’s challenge: find one thing you’ve been holding on to out of fear, and let it circulate.
New to Living Unchained? I reference ideas like Contributionism, stewardship instead of ownership, and abundance through circulation. If those are unfamiliar, start with Season One, where I lay the groundwork for a moneyless, post-scarcity society and everything we build on here.
I’m Justin Fairchild, the Kilted Farmer. Share this with someone who needs to hear it. That’s circulation too.
