Leaf bacteria boosting Bt: the discovery that could change how we apply bioinsecticides | SIP-IOBC 2026
In this episode of the series recorded live at SIP-IOBC 2026, I spoke with Luis Paniagua Voirol, researcher at Freie Universität Berlin, Germany, who presented a study on how leaf microbiota can enhance the insecticidal effect of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) against caterpillars.
In lab experiments, caterpillars feeding on plants colonized by a specific bacterial community on the leaf died at a rate of 100% when exposed to a Bt dose that would normally kill only a small portion of the population. In other words: bacteria that naturally live on the leaf surface may be a direct ally in bioinsecticide efficacy.
