Have you ever looked at your life and thought, Is this all there is?

Nothing may be terribly wrong. Your life may actually look pretty good from the outside. But inside, you feel uninspired, restless, or like you’re moving through the same day over and over again.

In this episode of The Midlife Spirituality Project, we’re talking about purpose in midlife and the yogic concept of dharma. Purpose doesn’t have to mean quitting your job, changing your marriage, or completely reinventing your life. In fact, it often begins with paying attention to the small moments that make you feel energized, alive, connected, and useful.

We’ll also explore why so many of us say “I don’t know what I want” when fear may actually be standing between us and what we already know. Instead of waiting until you have your entire purpose figured out, I’ll show you how to experiment, follow what lights you up, take tiny steps, and let your path become clearer as you move.

In This Episode

  • Why the question “Is this all there is?” can be a sign that you’re disconnected from purpose
  • What yoga philosophy means by dharma
  • Why purpose is not necessarily your career
  • How to recognize purpose through what energizes you and makes you feel alive
  • Why we often try to think our way into purpose instead of feeling our way toward it
  • How small everyday moments of service can be expressions of purpose
  • The role fear, conditioning, judgment, and self-doubt play in keeping us stuck
  • Why you don’t need to blow up your life to become more aligned
  • How tiny experiments can help you discover what actually belongs to you
  • Why motivation often comes after taking action
  • Tapas, commitment, and taking the next small step
  • Letting go of the outcome and focusing on who you become along the way
  • How living with purpose can create greater resilience during difficult seasons of life

Try This: Create Your Midlife Bucket List

Take out a piece of paper and write down the things you have always wanted to experience, learn, create, explore, or try.

Include the things that seem unrealistic.

Include the things you’re afraid someone might judge.

Include the dreams that keep returning, even if they don’t make logical sense yet.

Then choose one tiny step.

Take the lesson.

Buy the book.

Sign up for the class.

Make the phone call.

Tell someone what you want to do.

And then pay attention:

Does this make me feel more alive? More energized? More expansive? More like myself?

You don’t have to know where it will lead.

Purpose is something we refine over a lifetime. The practice is to keep turning the dial, listening for what comes through more clearly, and taking the next step toward what feels true.
