Most people can't, and that's not a memory problem. It's a learning problem, and the difference between the two matters more than you'd think.

This episode is about retrieval practice: pulling information out of your head instead of putting it in again. The research behind it is not subtle. Students who self-tested outscored their classmates by thirteen points on the same exam. People with mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer's disease improved their memory using an app for a few minutes a day, every single one of them.

So why does almost nobody do it?

Because rereading feels like it's working. And here's the part that makes this interesting rather than just another study-better lecture: in the short term, rereading actually does work better. People check their progress in the exact window where the wrong method looks right. Nobody's being lazy. They're reading a real signal on the wrong timescale.

There's also a specific case where voice actors are already doing this correctly, and it's worth knowing why.
