Fun Facts About the Puerto Princesa Subterranean River

Dela

The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River, located beneath the Saint Paul Mountain Range on the island of Palawan in the Philippines, is one of the world's most remarkable navigable underground waterways. Flowing directly into Saint Paul Bay, the cave system functions as a subterranean estuary where ocean tides push saltwater more than four kilometers inland, causing water levels to fluctuate by roughly three feet each day. Because dense seawater slides beneath the freshwater draining from the surrounding mountain forest, the river forms a distinct, two-layered aquatic ecosystem separated by a halocline. This dual environment supports both marine creatures, such as sea snakes and giant trevally along the riverbed, and freshwater species swimming near the surface. Deep within the karst limestone formations lie massive caverns, including the Cathedral Chamber and the colossal Italian's Chamber, which spans approximately 88 million cubic feet and features ceilings soaring 260 feet high.

Beyond its dramatic geology, the surrounding national park encompasses diverse forest habitats ranging from coastal mangroves to mountain rainforests that harbor hundreds of plant species and rare wildlife. Inside the pitch-black cave chambers, troglobitic crabs and shrimps rely on expanded olfactory receptors and elongated appendages rather than sight to scavenge for food. Roosting above, nine bat species and cave-dwelling swiftlets navigate the darkness using echolocation, sharing the cavern airspace between dusk and dawn. Their accumulated guano sustains the cave's subterranean food web, nourishing bottom-dwelling crabs, fish, and whip spiders. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999 and named one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature in 2012, the park maintains strict daily visitor limits to safeguard its fragile subterranean ecology while welcoming travelers from around the globe.
