Neurodivergence & Ethical Non-Monogamy: When Standard Relationship Advice Doesn't Fit

Dela

What if the problem isn’t that you’re bad at ethical non-monogamy, but that the advice you’ve been given was built for a nervous system that doesn’t work like yours?

In Season 2, Episode 8 of Untamed Ember, Dr. Misty explores ethical non-monogamy through a neurodivergent lens, including how autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, executive function, masking, and rejection sensitivity can change what communication and relationship support actually need to look like.

A lot of standard ENM advice assumes people can process emotions verbally in real time, tolerate last-minute changes, manage multiple schedules and emotional threads, and consistently initiate difficult conversations. For many neurodivergent people, those expectations create unnecessary strain and can make a relationship structure feel unworkable when the real problem is the method, not the relationship.

Through the story of Jules and Robin, this episode looks at what happens when someone stops trying to perform the “right” version of polyamory and starts building a relationship structure around their actual nervous system.

Dr. Misty covers:

• Why immediate verbal processing doesn’t work for every nervous system
• How ADHD executive function challenges can affect check-ins and scheduling
• Why sensory load matters in polyamorous and ENM relationships
• How masking can show up inside polyamory communities
• The difference between rejection sensitivity and jealousy
• Why written communication can be a legitimate primary communication style
• How predictable structure and recovery time can reduce nervous system overload
• Why stimming, movement, and avoiding eye contact may actually support engagement
• How to talk with partners and metamours about access needs
• Why accommodations are relationship design, not relationship failure

The right communication style is not the one most commonly recommended online. It’s the one that actually works for the nervous systems involved.
