Can music help people living with cancer feel better, cope better, and heal more fully?

In this episode of Adventures in Ethnomusicology, we look at a major Cochrane Review on musical interventions for people with cancer. Drawing from randomized controlled trials around the world, the review examines how music may affect anxiety, depression, pain, fatigue, heart rate, blood pressure, medication use, and overall quality of life.

The findings suggest that music can be more than comfort or background sound. When used thoughtfully as part of cancer care, music may help reduce fatigue, ease emotional distress, and improve a patient’s sense of well-being.

This episode explores what the evidence says, what it does not say, and why music continues to matter in the most vulnerable moments of human life.
