The Leadership Principles That Make Better Advisors (And Built Root's Culture)

Dela

Every firm says the same thing when you ask what makes them different: "It's our culture." It's a word so overused it barely means anything anymore. In this episode, James and Eden go looking for what's actually underneath it — not the perks or the recognition channels, but the foundational beliefs that shape how a team operates when no one's watching.

James pulls out the journal he wrote two months after launching Root — back when he was still deciding whether to build a solo practice or a team — and reads through the leadership principles he wrote down at the time: courage, self-control, extreme ownership, mastery of details, and more. The instinct is to think culture gets built through tactics — the Slack celebration channel, the recognition programs, the team events. This episode makes the case that those are just expressions of principles that have to exist first.

Advisors will walk away with a clearer sense of what separates managing people from actually leading them — why taking extreme ownership (even when it's not technically your fault) builds more trust with clients and teammates than assigning blame ever will, why "organizing the details" is a leader's real job, and why the standards you hold yourself to are the standards your team will eventually hold themselves to as well.
